Abstract: Melon is one of the most consumed cucurbits and commercially significant cucurbits in the world. It is planted predominantly through seedlings, and seed quality is essential in this process. Among the rapid tests used in seed analysis, the pH testing of exudate has shown promise for several cultivated species. Thus, this study aimed to verify the viability of melon (Cucumis melo L.) seeds through the pH testing of exudate. For this, seeds of the hybrids Premier and Supreme (three lots each) were subjected to germination and vigor tests (first germination count, tetrazolium, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, and emergence). The pH testing of exudate was evaluated using phenolphthalein and sodium carbonate solutions. The results indicated the possibility of classifying the lots into three quality levels for both hybrids, similar to most tests used to assess initial quality. Therefore, the pH testing of exudate was effective in determining the viability of lots of melon seeds and can be conducted with a soaking period of 120 minutes at 25 or 30 °C.

Resumo: O meloeiro é uma das cucurbitáceas mais consumidas e de maior interesse comercial do mundo. Seu plantio é realizado predominantemente por meio de mudas, sendo a qualidade das sementes fundamental neste processo. Dentre os testes rápidos utilizados na análise de sementes, o pH do exsudato tem se mostrado promissor para várias espécies cultivadas. Com isso, objetivou-se verificar a viabilidade de sementes de melão (Cucumis melo L.) por meio do teste de pH do exsudato. Para isso, sementes dos híbridos Premier e Supreme (três lotes de cada) foram submetidas aos testes de germinação e vigor (primeira contagem de germinação, tetrazólio, envelhecimento acelerado, índice de velocidade de emergência e emergência). O teste de pH de exsudato foi avaliado com a utilização de soluções de fenolftaleína e carbonato de sódio. Os resultados indicaram que para ambos os híbridos foi possível classificar os lotes em três níveis de qualidade, semelhantes a maioria dos testes utilizados na avaliação da qualidade inicial. Com isso, o teste de pH do exsudato mostrou-se eficaz para determinar a viabilidade de lotes de sementes de melão, podendo ser conduzido com período de embebição de 120 minutos a 25 ou 30 °C.

Resumo A propagação seminífera de Dietes bicolor é dificultada pela provável dormência física e/ou morfofisiológica. Objetivou-se analisar a eficácia de diferentes métodos de superação de dormência em sementes de D. bicolor a fim de determinar possível tratamento pré-germinativo para a espécie. Foram realizados dois experimentos: (I) Avaliação da quebra de dormência física, em que os tratamentos de escarificação mecânica utilizando-se lixa nº 100; escarificação química com ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) por 5 e 10 minutos e imersão em água quente (70 ºC), também, em 5 e 10 minutos foram avaliados. A semente intacta foi considerada testemunha. (II) Avaliação da dormência morfofisiológica, no qual as sementes foram submetidas a tratamentos combinados de estratificação de temperaturas quentes (20-35 °C) e/ou temperatura fria (9 ºC), distribuídas nos períodos de 0, 1 e 2 semanas, totalizando 9 tratamentos. Em ambos os experimentos se determinou a porcentagem de germinação (G), índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e primeira contagem (PC), utilizando-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados e avaliados pelo teste de Scott-Knott a 1% e Dunnett à 5%. O uso H2SO4 por 10 minutos induziu 42% de germinação, 0,52 de índice de velocidade de germinação e 18% de primeira contagem, todavia somente PC mostrou-se significativamente distinto em relação à testemunha. No segundo ensaio, o tratamento que passou somente duas semanas em temperatura (20-35 ºC) apresentou a maior germinação (30%), em relação à testemunha (G = 22%). Esses resultados constituem informações relevantes para a compreensão da fisiologia da germinação de D. bicolor, além de contribuir com a otimização de práticas pré-germinativas para essa importante espécie ornamental.

Abstract Seminiferous propagation of Dietes bicolor is hindered by the probable physical and/or morphophysiological dormancy. The objective was to analyze the efficacy of different methods of overcoming dormancy in D. bicolor seeds to determine a possible pre-germination treatment for the species. Two experiments were conducted: (I) Evaluation of the breaking of physical dormancy, in which the treatments of mechanical scarification were carried using sandpaper #100; chemical scarification with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) for 5 and 10 minutes and immersion in hot water (70 ºC), also, for 5 and 10 minutes, were evaluated. The intact seed was considered a control. (II) Evaluation of morphophysiological dormancy, in which the seeds were submitted to combined treatments of stratification of hot temperature (20-35 °C) and/or cold temperature (9 ºC), distributed in periods of 0, 1, and 2 weeks, totalizing 9 treatments. In both experiments, germination percentage (G), germination speed index (GSI), and first count (FC) were determined, using a randomized block design, and evaluated by the Scott-Knott test at 1% and Dunnett’s test at 5%. The use of H2SO4 10 minutes induced 42% germination, 0.52 GSI, and 18% FC, but only FC was significantly different from the control. In the second trial, the treatment that spent only two weeks in hot temperatures (20-35 ºC) showed the highest germination (30%), compared to the control (G = 22%). These results provide relevant information for understanding the physiology of D. bicolor germination, in addition to contributing to the optimization of pre-germination practices for this important ornamental species.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho estudar a morfologia de sementes e plântulas, além de se obter informações sobre o tipo e tempo da germinação das sementes de limão-doce em cinco substratos (em papel mata-borrão, entre papel mata-borrão, em areia esterilizada lavada, entre areia esterilizada lavada e em rolo de papel). Sementes de C. limetta foram mensuradas suas dimensões e realizada a descrição externa. Posteriomente, semeadas entre areia e mantidas à 25 ºC para acompanhamento da germinação e descrição morfologica das plântulas resultantes. Um segundo experimento foi avaliado quanto a eficiência dos substratos: rolo de papel, sobre e entre papel, sobre e entre areia na germinação de sementes de C. limetta. Foram avaliados o índice de velocidade, o tempo médio e a frequência relativa da germinação. Além disso, foi estabelecida a data da primeira e última contagem da germinação. As médias dos tratamentos foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. As sementes de C. limetta são ovoides, levemente enrugadas e poliembrionicas. A germinação é hipógea, criptocotiledonar ou fanerocotiledonar. As plântulas apresentam eofilos coriáceos com folhas simples, formato elíptico ou próximo do elíptico, tendendo para ovado. Apresenta sistema radicular pivotante coloração de amarelo a creme com presença de raízes secundárias. O tempo médio de germinação é entre 18 e 22 dias. O substrato indicado para germinação das sementes é sobre papel.

ABSTRACT: This research studied the morphology of seeds and seedlings, in addition to obtaining information about the type and time of germination of sweet lemon seeds in five substrates (on blotting paper, between blotting paper, on washed sterilized sand, between washed sterilized sand and in paper roll). C. limetta seeds were measured, and external description was performed. Afterwards, sown in the sand and kept at 25 ºC to monitoring germination and morphological description of the resulting seedlings. A second experiment was evaluated for substrate efficiency: paper roll, on and between paper, on and between sand in the germination of C. limetta seeds. Speed index, average time and relative frequency of germination were evaluated. In addition, date of the first and last germination count was established. Treatment averages were compared using the Tukey test at 5% probability. C. limetta seeds are ovoid, slightly wrinkled and polyembryonic. Germination is hypogeal, cryptocotylar or phanerocotylar. The seedlings have leathery eophylls with simple leaves, elliptical shape or close to the elliptical, tending to ovate. It has a pivoting root system that is colored yellow to cream with the presence of secondary roots. The average germination time is between 18 and 22 days. The substrate indicated for seed germination is on paper.

RESUMO A identificação de áreas que possibilitam a produção de sementes com elevada pureza e viabilidade é importante para a logística das empresas do setor sementeiro. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito da procedência na viabilidade e na qualidade física de sementes de Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça. Dezenove lotes de sementes procedentes dos Estados de São Paulo (seis de Auriflama e três de Guzolândia) e Goiás (oito de Quirinópolis e dois de Serranópolis) foram avaliados por meio dos seguintes parâmetros: teor de água, viabilidade pelo teste de tetrazólio, pureza física, valor cultural, peso de mil sementes e outras sementes por número. A qualidade física e a viabilidade das sementes de P. maximum cv. Mombaça são influenciadas pela procedência. Todos os lotes apresentam sementes com viabilidade suficiente para atender aos padrões de comercialização. Com base na pureza física, o lote dois de Quirinópolis – GO não pode ser comercializado. Com base no exame de sementes nocivas 85% dos lotes podem ser comercializados.

ABSTRACT Identifying areas that would enable the production of highly pure and viable seeds is important for the logistics of companies that act in the seed sector. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of provenance on the viability and physical quality of seeds of Panicum maximum ‘Mombasa’. Nineteen seed batches from the states of São Paulo (six from Auriflama and three from Guzolândia) and Goiás (eight from Quirinópolis and two from Serranópolis) were evaluated using the following parameters: water content, viability by tetrazolium test, physical purity, PLS, 1000-seed weight and number of other seeds. Physical quality and viability in seeds of P. maximum ‘Mombasa’ are affected by their provenance. All the seed batches showed a sufficient level of viability to meet marketing standards. Based on physical purity, seed samples from Quirinópolis, Goiás should not be marketed. Based on an examination of noxious seeds, 85% of the seed samples are suitable for marketing.

ABSTRACT The Cerrado biome has several species that can generate income, and the cajá-manga is one of these native species with great potential but with scarce information about its morphological characterization. Thus, this work aimed to characterize the fruit, endocarp, seeds, and seedlings of cajá-manga morphologically. The fruits were evaluated by the characteristics of the length, width, and diameter of the fruit, endocarp, and seeds, the number of loculi, and the weight of fruits and endocarp. The plantlets were evaluated for the number of seedlings per endocarp, number of leaflets, number of leaflets of the 3rd and 4th leaves, stem diameter, length of the shoot and root, root and shoot dry matter and data analyzed by descriptive analysis. The morphometric characteristics of the fruits, endocarp, and seeds were analyzed using the Scott-Knott test. The morphological characteristics of the fruits, the endocarps, the seeds, and the plantlets of cajá-manga varied within the mother plants. These results can be used as a basis for future selection of plants with desirable characteristics on breeding programs.

ABSTRACT Bauhinia scandens is an ornamental plant and it has anti-tumor properties. The demand for seedlings of this species makes it necessary to know about the germinative behavior of seeds and the initial growth of seedlings. The objective of the present work was to determine the type of substrate and moistening conditions that are more favorable to the emergence and development of seedlings of B. scandens. B. scandens seeds were disposed on three substrates: sand, vermiculite, and commercial substrate, maintained at four levels of moistening 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the water holding capacity of the substrate and kept in a greenhouse for 60 days. The following parameters were evaluated: emergence, speed index, average time, number of leaves, length of aerial part and root, diameter of neck, fresh and dry mass of aerial part and root. The analysis of variance was performed in a completely randomized design, in a 3 X 4 factorial scheme, with four replications of 25 seeds. The sowing of B. scandens should be carried out initially in vermiculite with a holding capacity of 100% until the establishment of the seedling emergence and then transplanted to commercial substrate keeping between 50 and 75% holding capacity.

Abstract The aim of this work was to verify the effect of size classification on the physical and physiological quality of Eucalyptus spp. seeds to optimize the selection for covering. The seeds were separated in sieves with six size classes: 850, 710, 600, 500, 425 µm, and a non-perforated bottom (< 425 µm). Were evaluated the sieve retention, purity, weight of a thousand seeds, germination, and first count of germination. Sieve classification is effective for the separation of materials according to the best physical and physiological qualities. E. grandis seeds from the 710 µm sieve, E. robusta from the 850 µm sieve, and E. urophylla from the 710 and 850 µm sieves can be selected for covering, as they present maximum physical and physiological quality. For the three species, the smallest materials, retained in the 500, 425, and bottom <425µm sieves, must be discarded due to low purity and germination potential.

RESUMO A qualidade das sementes é influenciada pelas condições climáticas do campo de produção. A identificação das características dos melhores campos de sementes de forrageiras permite o aprimoramento do setor. Neste estudo, objetivou-se identificar características climáticas das regiões produtoras que podem afetar as qualidades física e fisiológica de sementes de Brachiaria brizantha cv. BRS 'Piatã'. Sementes de 10 lotes foram avaliados quanto à pureza, outras sementes, massa de mil sementes, teor de água, germinação, dormência, emergência, primeira contagem de emergência de plântulas em areia e emergência das plântulas em campo. Foram obtidos os dados de temperatura e precipitação de cada campo de produção desde o florescimento até a colheita. As médias dos tratamentos foram comparadas pelo teste de Scott-Knott, a 5% de probabilidade. Para discriminar quais fatores ambientais influenciaram a qualidade das sementes aplicou-se a análise estatística multivariada através da Análise de Componentes Principais. Concluiu-se que campos de produção com temperaturas acima de 30 °C nas épocas de florescimento, degrana e colheita estão relacionados à produção de sementes de capim-piatã de menor qualidade física e fisiológica. Campos com precipitações pluviométricas acumuladas superiores a 500 e 137 mm no período de florescimento e colheita, respectivamente, são desfavoráveis ao vigor das sementes produzidas.

ABSTRACT The quality of seeds is influenced by the climatic conditions of the production field. The identification of characteristics of the best forage seed fields allows the improvement of the sector. In this study, the aim was to identify climatic characteristics of producing regions that may affect the physical and physiological quality of Brachiaria brizantha cv. BRS 'Piatã' seeds. Seeds from 10 lots were evaluated for purity, other seeds, mass of a thousand seed, water content, germination, dormancy, emergence, seedling emergence in sand and seedling emergence in the field. Temperature and precipitation data of each production field from flowering to harvest were obtained. The means of treatments were compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. In order to discriminate which environmental factors influenced seed quality, multivariate statistical analysis was applied through Principal Component Analysis. It was concluded that production fields with temperatures above 30 °C in flowering, threshing and harvesting periods are related to the production of 'Piatã' grass seeds of lower physical and physiological quality. Fields with accumulated rainfall above 500 and 137 mm in the flowering and harvesting period, respectively, are unfavorable to seed vigor.

Resumo A compreensão do comportamento in vitro de explantes de flamboyant cultivados em meio de cultura suplementado com diferentes tipos e concentrações de citocininas pode auxiliar na otimização de sistemas de regeneração estabelecidos para essa espécie vegetal. Objetivou-se com o presente estudo avaliar o comportamento de explantes cotiledonares de flamboyant quando cultivados na presença de elevadas concentrações de 6-benziladenina (BA) ou cinetina (KIN). Segmentos cotiledonares obtidos de plântulas germinadas in vitro foram inoculados em meio de cultura Murashige e Skoog (MS), suplementado com diferentes concentrações (1, 2, 4, 8 mg L-1) de 6-benziladenina (BA) ou cinetina (KIN). No tratamento controle não foi adicionado reguladores de crescimento. Após 40 dias de cultivo, independente da concentração utilizada, os tratamentos suplementados com BA apresentaram maiores porcentagens de formação de calos e massa fresca, em comparação aos tratamentos suplementados com KIN. A formação de gemas adventícias foi observada principalmente nos tratamentos suplementados com BA. Análises histológicas evidenciaram que a formação de gemas adventícias ocorreu na periferia de calos formados a partir de células do mesofilo, nas regiões de seccionamento do explante. Os resultados obtidos fornecem novas informações para o estabelecimento de um sistema de micropropagação de flamboyant, uma importante espécie arbórea ornamental.

Abstract Understanding the in vitro performance of royal poinciana explants cultured in media supplemented with different types and concentrations of cytokinins may aid in the optimization of regeneration systems established for this woody species. In the present study we evaluate the in vitro performance of royal poinciana cotyledonary explants cultured in the presence of high concentrations of 6-benzyladenine (BA) and kinetin (KIN). Cotyledonary segments obtained from in vitro germinated seedlings were inoculated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with different concentrations (1, 2, 4, 8 mg L-1) of BA or KIN. In the control treatment, no plant growth regulators (PGRs) were added. After 40 days of culture, regardless of the concentration used, the treatments supplemented with BA presented higher calli percentage and fresh mass compared to treatments supplemented with KIN. Adventitious shoots were mainly observed in BA-treatments. Histological analysis showed that adventitious shoots formed at the periphery of callus formed from mesophyll cells in the regions of the explant sectioning. The results obtained provide new information for the establishment of a micropropagation system for royal poinciana, an important ornamental tree species.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo verificar a eficiência da análise multivariada na identificação de testes de vigor promissores para a avaliação da qualidade fisiológica de lotes de sementes de Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk. Foram avaliados 13 lotes de sementes de B. decumbens, cv. Basilisk, quanto aos seguintes parâmetros: teor de água, germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, teste de frio, condutividade elétrica, crescimento de plântulas, massa seca de plântulas, primeira contagem e porcentagem de emergência de plântulas em substrato areia no laboratório e emergência de plântulas em campo. Os dados obtidos em cada teste, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, foram analisados separadamente por meio de análise de variância, teste de Scott-Knott e análise multivariada. A análise multivariada de componentes principais é eficiente para discriminar os testes de vigor e de germinação de sementes B. decumbens, cv. Basilisk, capazes de identificar os lotes de desempenho superior em campo. Os testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas em areia, primeira contagem de emergência de plântulas em areia, comprimento da parte aérea de plântulas e o teste de frio são promissores na avaliação da qualidade fisiológica de lotes de sementes de B. decumbens, cv. Basilisk, fornecendo informações semelhantes à emergência de plântulas em campo.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify the efficiency of multivariate analysis in the identification of promising vigor tests for the evaluation of the physiological quality of seed lots of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk. Seeds of B. decumbens cv. Basilisk were tested for the following parameters: water content, germination, first germination count, cold test, electrical conductivity, seedling growth, seedling dry mass, first count and emergence percentage of seedlings in laboratory substrate, and seedling emergence in the field. The data obtained in each test-all completely randomized experimental designs-were analyzed separately by means of analysis of variance, Scott-Knott’s test, and multivariate analysis. Principal component analysis is efficient to discriminate vigor and seed germination tests capable of identifying the top performance batch in the field. Germination, first germination count, emergence of seedlings in sand, first seedling emergence count in sand, shoot length, and the cold test are promising in the evaluation of the physiological quality of seed lots of B. decumbens cv. Basilisk, providing similar information to that from the emergence of field seedlings.

Resumo As sementes de cajá apresentam germinação lenta e desuniforme, pois o processo normalmente tem duração de seis meses e dois anos. Tal característica constitui-se em entrave para os viveiristas, pois onera os custos de produção e resulta em mudas com tamanhos diversos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estabelecer técnicas e estratégias de seleção de sementes de cajá (Spondias mombin L.) que promovam ou acelerem a germinação. Para tanto, foram realizados dois experimentos. No primeiro, foram avaliadas sementes (nuculânios) de duas cores (bege e marrom) e quatro classes de tamanho (pequena, média-pequena, média-grande e grande) caracterizadas por meio do comprimento, largura e massa. No segundo experimento, as sementes classificadas quanto à cor (bege e marrom) foram submetidas ou não à aplicação de fungicida e à escarificação mecânica do endocarpo (base, ápice, lateral e sem escarificação mecânica). Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições de 20 sementes, nos seguintes arranjos fatoriais: 4 x 2 (tamanho x cor) e 4 x 2 x 2 (escarificação x cor x fungicida). Avaliou-se a emergência de plântulas em areia, primeira contagem e o tempo médio da emergência. Em ambos os estudos, a emergência foi avaliada semanalmente, até os 730 dias. Concluiu-se que a seleção de sementes marrons e média-grandes (31 x 18 cm e 2,16 g) constituiu-se em uma estratégia eficiente para aumentar e acelerar a emergência de plântulas. O tratamento das sementes com fungicida (metalaxil-M+fludioxonil) foi prejudicial ao processo germinativo. A utilização de sementes marrons e escarificadas na lateral possibilitou a aceleração da germinação (tempo médio de 489 para 336 dias).

Abstract The germination of Spondias mombin seeds is slow and irregular - it takes between 6 and 24 months for the process to complete. This causes serious difficulties to the plantlet producer since the plantlets are more expensive to produce and frequently are of different heights. The objective of this project was to establish techniques and strategies of yellow mombin (Spondias mombin L.) seed selection to promote and speed up germination. Having that in mind, two experiments were carried out. In the first, seeds (which are of the nucular type) of two colors (beige and brown) and four classes of size (small, medium-small, medium-large, and large) had their length, width, and weight determined. In the second experiment, the color (beige and brown) classified seeds were submitted or not to a fungicide treatment and to mechanical scarification of the endocarp (base, apex, lateral, and no scarification). The experiments were distributed according to a completely random design with four 20 seeds replications in the following factorial arrangements: 4x2 (size x color) and 4x2x2 (scarification x color x fungicide). Seedling emergence in sand, first count of germination, and mean time for germination were weekly determined up to 730 days; these evaluations were based on the determination of normal seedlings counting. Choosing brown and medium-large seeds is an efficient strategy to accelerate seedling emergence. Treating the seeds with fungicide was harmful to the germination process. The lateral scarification of brown seeds permitted a reduction in the period necessary for the completion of germination from 489 to 336 days.

RESUMO Nas Regras para Análise de Sementes há relato do uso de envelope de papel para o teste de germinação, porém sem qualquer descrição do método. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade do método do envelope e do nível de umedecimento do substrato no teste de germinação de sementes de cebola. A pesquisa foi executada em duas etapas. Na primeira, um lote de sementes foi avaliado por meio de dois métodos de semeadura (sobre papel e em envelope de papel) e cinco níveis de umedecimento do substrato em água: 1,5; 2,0; 2,5; 3,0 e 3,5 vezes a massa seca do papel. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial de 2x5. Na segunda etapa da pesquisa, os dois métodos de semeadura citados na primeira etapa foram testados em oito lotes de sementes, utilizando o delineamento inteiramente casualizado e esquema fatorial de 2x8. Foi avaliado o grau de umidade, a germinação e a primeira contagem de germinação. Foi cronometrado o tempo despendido para a instalação, semeadura, contagem e desmonte do teste de germinação. Concluiu-se que o método do envelope é viável para o teste de germinação de sementes de cebola. O umedecimento do substrato em água mais favorável à germinação é de 2,5 vezes a massa seca do papel. O método do envelope é rápido, prático e ocupa menor espaço nos germinadores, adaptando-se à rotina de um laboratório de análise de sementes.

ABSTRACT The Rules for Seed Analysis reports the use of a paper envelope in germination tests, but without any description of the exact method. The objective of this study was to evaluate the viability of the envelope method and the optimal level of substrate wetting when performing germination tests of onion seeds. The study was performed in two stages. In the first stage, a batch of seeds was evaluated using two seeding methods (on paper and in a paper envelope) and five levels of substrate wetting with differing amounts of water: 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 times the dry mass of the paper. A completely randomized design was used in a 2×5 factorial scheme. In the second stage of the study, the two seeding methods mentioned in the prior were tested in eight seed batches using a completely randomized design and a 2×8 factorial scheme. The degree of moisture, germination, and the first count of germination were evaluated. The time spent for the installation, seeding, counting, and disassembling of the germination test were determined. It was concluded that the envelope method is fit for use in onion seed germination tests. The optimal amount of water to add to the substrate is 2.5 times the dry mass of the paper substrate. The envelope method is fast, practical, and more efficiently uses space within germinator chambers, making it easily incorporable into routine tests within seed analysis laboratories.

RESUMO O capim-massai é uma importante gramínea forrageira tropical e suas sementes ao serem recebidas pelas empresas, após a colheita realizada por varredura no chão, contém impurezas cuja remoção é realizada por máquinas de beneficiamento. Este procedimento é necessário para a obtenção de sementes dentro dos padrões de qualidade para a comercialização e a semeadura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito das etapas de beneficiamento na qualidade física e fisiológica de sementes de capim-massai (Panicum maximum x P. infestum, cv. Massai) visando à comercialização. As sementes foram amostradas antes do processamento e após a saída da máquina de ventilador e peneiras (descarga das peneiras superior, intermediária e fundo), primeira mesa gravitacional (deriva, descarga superior e intermediária), máquina tratadora e segunda mesa gravitacional (descarga superior, intermediária e inferior). Sendo avaliadas quanto ao teor de água, qualidade física (pureza e peso de mil sementes) e fisiológica (germinação, primeira contagem, classificação do vigor de plântulas, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência de plântulas em campo, índice de velocidade de emergência e comprimento da raiz primária e da parte aérea de plântulas). O beneficiamento de sementes na máquina de ar e peneiras e mesa gravitacional aprimorou a qualidade física e fisiológica do lote de sementes de capim-massai. A semente de maior potencial fisiológico é obtida na descarga intermediária da primeira mesa gravitacional procedida pelo processamento na máquina de ventilador e peneiras. Para esta espécie o beneficiamento não é necessário para atender os requisitos de pureza e germinação estabelecidos pelos padrões para a comercialização nacional de sementes.

ABSTRACT Massai grass is an important tropical forage grass. The harvested seeds upon being received by the company, are found to be contaminated with impurities which are removable by processing machines. This procedure is necessary to produce seeds of a quality level within standards established for commercialization and sowing purposes. The objective of this project was to evaluate the effects of processing phases on the physical and physiological quality of massai grass (Panicum maximum x P. infestum, cv. Massai) seeds for commercialization purposes. Seeds were sampled before processing and after leaving the air and screen machine (upper and intermediary screens and bottom); first gravity table (drift, upper and intermediate spouts); treating machine; and second gravity table (upper, intermediate, and lower spouts). Seeds were evaluated as to water content, physical (purity and 1,000 seeds weight) and physiological quality (germination, first count of germination, seedling vigor classification, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in the field, speed of emergence index, and primary root length, shoot length). Massai grass seeds had their physical and physiological qualities improved when they were processed by an air and screen machine and a gravity table. Seeds from the intermediate discharge spout of the first gravity table, after going through the air and screen machine, are those of with highest physiological potential. The seeds of this species do not need to be processed to fit the germination and purity standards when the national market is the goal.

Resumo A dormência das sementes pode diminuir durante o armazenamento, e algumas condições do ambiente podem acelerar este processo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar técnicas eficientes para condicionar as sementes de umbu de modo a promover e a uniformizar a germinação. As sementes foram armazenadas por 180 dias em sacos de papel mantidos em cinco condições de ambiente: laboratório (25 ºC e 55% UR); estufa morna (40 ºC e 53% UR); estufa quente (50 ºC e 49% UR); câmara seca (18 oC e 65% UR) e câmara fria (10 oC e 65%UR). A qualidade das sementes foi avaliada a cada 60 dias, por meio dos seguintes testes e determinações: teor de água; teste de germinação (25 ºC e 55% UR, avaliado semanalmente até 91 dias após a semeadura); teste da primeira contagem (14 dias); índice de velocidade de germinação; tempo médio de germinação e condutividade elétrica. O condicionamento das sementes de umbu em laboratório, ou em estufa morna (40 ºC), foi técnica eficiente para promover e uniformizar a germinação; nestas condições, após seis meses de armazenamento, a germinação aumentou de 31% para 84 e 74%, respectivamente.

Abstract Seed dormancy may decrease during storage and some environmental conditions may accelerate this process. The aim of this work was to determine efficient techniques to condition umbu seeds in order to promote and standardize their germination. Seeds were stored for 180 days in paper bags kept in five ambient conditions: laboratory (25 ºC and 55% RH); warm oven (40 °C and 53% RH); hot oven (50 °C and 49% RH); dry chamber (18 °C and 65% RH) and cold chamber (10 °C and 65% RH). Seed quality was evaluated every 60 days by means of the following tests and determinations: water content; germination test (25 °C and 55% RH, weekly evaluated up to 91 days after sowing); first count test (14 days); germination rate index; mean germination time and electrical conductivity. The conditioning of umbu seeds in laboratory, or in warm oven (40 ºC) used efficient techniques to promote and standardize germination; under these conditions, after six months of storage, germination increased from 31% to 84 and 74%, respectively.

RESUMO. Neste estudo objetivou-se analisar a qualidade fisiológica de diásporos de matrizes de Myracrodruon urundeuva, em três anos de coletas e diferentes áreas do Cariri paraibano, Brasil. Uma área no município de São João do Cariri, e duas em Boa Vista foram demarcadas, cujas matrizes foram avaliadas pela viabilidade e vigor de seus diásporos em três anos consecutivos. Diásporos das matrizes selecionadas foram submetidos à determinação do teor de água e as seguintes variáveis: germinação, emergência de plântulas, primeira contagem de germinação e de emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de germinação e de emergência de plântulas. A significância dos efeitos foi realizada através da estatística deviance. Para os fatores anos e áreas de coleta as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade e para a variação entre as matrizes realizou-se análise de componentes principais e agrupamento. A variação da qualidade fisiológica de diásporos de M. urundeuva é dependente dos fatores ambientais. A qualidade fisiológica de diásporos de M. urundeuva varia em relação às matrizes, áreas e anos de coleta. As matrizes dos grupos 1 e 2 são as mais promissoras por conterem representantes das três áreas e produzirem diásporos com elevado potencial fisiológico.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of diaspores from Myracrodruon urundeuva mother trees developing in the Cariri region of the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The seeds were collected during three consecutive years and from different areas of the Cariri region. The seed collection areas comprised two sites in the municipality of Boa Vista and one in the municipality of São João do Cariri. The diaspores had their water content determined and were submitted to the following tests: germination, seedling emergence, first count of germination and seedling emergence (within 5 days), and speed of germination and seedling emergence. The treatment means were compared using the deviance statistic. The collection years and collection areas were compared by the Tukey test at a 5% probability level. The comparison between mother trees was made through principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The detected variation in the quality of M. urundeuva diaspores is dependent on environmental conditions. The physiological quality of M. urundeuva diaspores varies according to mother tree, collection area and year. Mother trees of groups 1 and 2 are the most promising since they included representatives of all three areas and produced diaspores of high physiological quality.
